La Strada Novissima

Presenting the Past

The first international architecture biennale in Venice, curated by Paolo Portoghesi  and entitled ‘La Strada Novissima’ took place in the Arsenal in 1980. Gathering 20 architects that constructed an elevation to the street encompassing their design theories. It was considered to be the stepping stone for post modernism but as time has shown, everything may be not all that it seems and some architects were not addressed. In retrospect a lot has happened in the world of architecture since then; new beginnings and a digital horizon, but we are still practicing architecture. It might be said that this initial biennale was the foundation of what put the art of architecture on display and by rights this Strada Novissima deems respect. It is not a question of style but the military might that this work took and was to undertake much as the war ships of the Arsenal in its origin. I post this now lest it be forgotten that we occupy a cruel world intent on confusing the issue of life that architecture is instrumental in its making good. Let us welcome tomorrow with an aptitude of bravado so there is hope for us all.

Dead Famous

Presenting the Past; an anthology of architectural dreams that have crossed over. Collectively they describe a world we have no idea how to inhabit but they do offer a sense of fragility to the human frame. Architecture and Mortality are held in a very delicate symbiosis as they attempt to express the wealth of an idea. Together, these dead famous architects have the residue of their imagination firmly placed on the world while together we wonder what it was all for; for what event that time needs to describe so vividly.
